Berlin

Berlin has more than 3.7 million citizens and more than 6 million live in the metropolitan area. Berlin has the lowest number of cars per resident in Germany with 330 cars per 1000 citizens. Nevertheless, it is the (car) sharing capital of Germany with more than 3,000 shared cars and 500 shared L1E vehicles and an expected growth of 100% in 2019 in numbers of vehicles.

On 01.01.2018 there were 2,000 EVs registered in Berlin and around 2,500 L1e vehicles. The number of private EVs registered in Berlin is expected to reach 6,500 EVs at the end of 2019 and 25,000-30,000 at the end of the eCharge4Drivers project. There were 0.22 public charging stations per 1000 residents and 3.2 EVs per public charging station in 2018.

Partners involved: Chargery, Greenpack (supported by the Berlin Agency for electromobility)

Current problems related to charging in the area

Only in 2019 2,500 more shared EV cars will be introduced in Berlin abruptly increasing the charging demand which is not being met, mainly in the city centre. EV users spend a considerable amount of time and energy to find a usable charging station. On the other hand, there is very limited public space in the city centre for additional charging stations with corresponding parking slots. Current CPs have limited interoperability and offer no information to the user before and during the charging process.

Addressed
problems

In Berlin the charging demand is abruptly increasing mainly in the city centre. Besides there is very limited public space in the city centre for additional charging stations with corresponding parking slots. Current CPs have limited interoperability and offer no information to the user before and during the charging process.

Solutions

Mobile chargers will be brought to End-users next to parking spots in the streets of Berlin (Chargery).

What will Berlin do in the project

Chargery will lead tasks related to mobile charging service – An operational mobile charging service will be extended to be used by private users. This uses electrified bike trailers with exchangeable batteries which are ordered in advance by app and which charge the EV at its parking spot without the user present, so the user does not have to search for a charging station. Until now this mobile charging serves only EV sharing companies and does not focus on private users. Within eCharge4Drivers it will evolve to serve private users and provide the enhanced information offered by the eCharge4Drivers developments. Mobile charging stations will be available for demonstrations with the built-in functionality of 230V AC (11/22 kW) as well 400V DC with 30kW for all charging standards available on the market – Demonstrations will be done in Berlin and Grenoble in 2022.
